Polyphonic and nuanced – Mendelssohn’s oratorio »Elijah« is characterised by deep religiousness. It was created in 1846, only one year before Mendelssohn’s death. Before, he had a great success with his oratorio »Paulus«, but did not have time to finish another oratorio. The main character is the prophet Elijah from the Old Testament. Mendelssohn tells the story of his workings in two parts, using quotations from psalms and excerpts of the New Testament. Elijah’s fight against polytheism and the Baal cult is rendered in notes, fascinating time and again with its gripping choirs, dramatically composed scenes and simple angelic music.
