Aurora Negra / Black Sunrise
Aurora Negra, Portugal
[recommended for ages 15 and up ]
»How are Black people represented in a theatre landscape that is still dominated by white people? Aurora Negra have created a manifesto for the visibility and participation of Black people on and off stage.« — The Curators.
It starts with a women singing in Creole. She speaks Chokwe. She speaks Portuguese. She’s followed by three women who are not from Portugal, speaking the same three languages. Disposition, personality and life path intersect in every one of these three women, making it certain that nothing will ever be as it was. They are looking for the deepest roots of their cultures and they celebrate their heritage to be able to assert themselves as the protagonists of their own stories.
The collective Aurora Negra was founded by Cleo Diára, Isabél Zuaa and Nádica Yracema in 2020 to create a space for their stories with their own fictions, voices and bodies. They are currently working on their third stage production »A Missão da Missão« (The Mission of the Mission).
